"What the Hay" Scenic Route ~ From Great Falls, MT ~ 172 miles round trip
Take US 87 southeast of Great Falls to spacious Judith Basin County where your first stop can be in Stanford where you can gas up, go shopping or you can stop for a visit at Candel's By Way Cafe, the Pump Bar or the Waterhole Saloon. Continue down US 87 and drive to Hobson for more entertainment and set your sights on the beginning of a creative adventure. There is a great side road, about 25 miles, which is all paved from Hobson to Windham. About halfway on this portion of the route there is Utica and the Oxen Yoke. The “Ox” serves a their famous half pound burger and large fries in a basket; large enough to possibly feed two! During the "What the Hay" festivities, make sure to check out the Utica Fair. There are many vendors to choose from. Heading back home, make sure to visit the Bar 87 where you can have some fun with karaoke and sing to your hearts content or shoot some pool with your friends. Along this motorcycle route, you will pass many scenes from Charlie Russell's paintings that are still visible today. This route is designated as the C.M. Russell Trail. Stop at the Forest Service office in Stanford to request a free copy of the C.M. Russell Auto Tour booklet which gives great information about western artist Russell's paintings along with history of the area.

There is much to do and see as you take in this motorcycle route. Whether you are coming to an event in our area or going on a "Poker Run" with your friends, there are many beautiful scenic views and great new friends to make along the way. This route suggests beginning travel in Lewistown, although you could really begin anywhere and make your own traveling route. Enjoy the wonderous views while traveling here in our area, have fun and tell your friends!
