About CARC

The MAES Central Montana Agriculture Center (CARC) is located near Moccasin, Montana.  We consider them the pride and joy of all ag research from around the state.  In July 2007, they celebrated their 100th Anniversary!

Much work and pride goes into helping not only the farmers and ranchers in the Judith Basin area, but also around the state.  Constantly working to improve the quality of wheat and barley for our producers as well as our grain buyers.  Many hours of research go into finding crop and forage varieties and species that are more nutritious, produce higher yields, are less susceptible to disease and insect pests or produce more energy.  Feel free to stop buy the research center and see how your food is produced!

CARC Field Day

The 2011 CARC field day will be held on July 7th and lunch will be provided.  What a great event!

Field plot presentations include Ley Farming, camelina in wheat production systems, pulse crop variety evaluations, cereal grain variety development and evaluations, crop pest (disease and insect) management, and spring and winter cereal forage variety development.

Concurrent with the traditional field day format, a youth (years 10 to 17) Ag research program will be presented.  More and more of us are thinking an overt effort needs to be made to recruit our youth into Ag production careers or at least have an appreciation of production agriculture if the United States hopes to retain its food independence and have functional and healthy Ag policy.  We need to instill in our youth an appreciation and understanding of production agriculture that will provide them with a good solid base for their future positions as innovators, developers, and implementers of public policy.

This year, CARC will offer a youth component at the annual field day on July 7th. Topics included careers in the agriculture industry, plant identification and anatomy, soil type and texture, crop growth stages, and more. Youths received one-on-one time with researchers who explained current research projects at CARC. They will also offer a plant identification contest and prizes will be awarded.

The 2011 Central Ag Research Center Field Day will be
held on Thursday, July 7th.
