We create beautiful art.
The MMAS held its first meeting in 2001; its purpose to promote and further the interests of all forms of visual fine arts, while fostering an understanding and appreciation of them among members and in the community at large.
The organization, begun by a woman who once owned the Sundown Inn Restaurant, boasted 32 charter members.
The group meets once a month from March through November. They take turns hosting the meeting and offer various programs to benefit their talents and to further their abilities as artists.
This year, the MMAS members in the Judith Basin area will be hosting the Visual Verbal Exchange inviting poets from around the country to join them.
Each artist receives a poem or short story from a writing group. The visual artist is then required to create a visual representation of the verbal work; in turn, the writing group must create a verbal piece for a visual piece submitted in the exchange. When a sufficient amount of time has been given, all of the artists get together to share their work, each one explaining what he/she had in mind at the onset of the work.
Both the poetry and the artwork will be displayed on "The Wall" in the Basin Trading Post during CMR Stampede Weekend. MMAS members also exhibit their work in various shows throughout the county, including Utica Days and the Judith Basin County Fair (in the Old School House).
Since 2009, several member artists have operated the Basin Gallery in the Basin Trading Post, located on Central Avenue in Stanford.
These members have an area where they can display their work on a permanent basis. They take turns manning the gallery and use their gallery time as studio time.
The gallery is open 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, offering visitors a look at work in progress and a visit with the artist.
Make sure to also visit the Artist's Wall which regularly features the work of local artists and photography from around the area. Several area artists and individual creations are featured throughout the year. Stop by and see these creative works of art!
